Cobbitty Cricket - A Historical View
Cobbitty Cricket Club has been highly family aligned
since its inception in 1896. The Club's first ground was on private land near
the Cobbitty Catholic Church and Cemetery, where clergy and community "played
with a ghostly audience".
Unfortunately the original cricket ground was also
considered prime real estate and became the home of one of Cobbitty's grand old
mansions.
A new ground needed to be found and a site was agreed
upon along the banks of the Nepean River, which in 1997 is the site of the
famous 'Cognos Brothers' Winery, boasting some of the best vineyards the
district has to offer. Cricket flourished beside the river for several years
before a third move was required, again to make way for better use of the
fertile river flat soil.
"The Crows" finally found a permanent home in 1903,
when a church owned paddock was offered to the Club at Chittick Lane, Cobbitty.
A turf pitch (more resembling concrete) was fashioned from the ground and the
"Cobbitty Bounce" was born.
Chittick Lane, Cobbitty is still in use today and still
renown for the "1903 Cobbitty Bounce" and boasts a fine heritage of cricket and
three generations of "Crows". Chittick Lane is also the Oldest Cricket Ground in
the District.
In 1993 the club was reformed to incorporate growth
areas and the Club was named Cobbitty/Narellan Cricket Club.
In the 1997/98 year, the Club celebrated its Centenary
Year and both the junior and senior clubs joined forces under their current name
of Cobbitty/Narellan. In 1997 the club constructed a turf wicket with a 5 wicket
square at Birriwa Reserve Mt Annan. The majority of work was done by club
members and their hard work was rewarded with the first game played there in the
1998 season. In the 1998/99 season the Club won the premier senior cricket
trophy, the 1st grade premiership.
The Club is currently based at Birriwa Reserve as well
as Cuthill Reserve, Cobbitty where the Club members have spent countless hours
turning a tin shed into a clubhouse, amenities block, kitchen and meeting
rooms.
2006/07 saw the club field 11 junior teams and 9
senior teams along with running Milo Have-A-Go cricket for over 50 young cricket enthusiasts
aged 5yrs to 9yrs making it one of the largest cricket clubs in the CDCA.
With
several members being selected for district, state and national teams. The Coyte
family who had 3 family members playing for Cobbitty Narellan with oldest
son Scott representing the NSW Blues,
whilst Sarah and Adam both represented at national school level. Cobbitty
Narellan Cricket has produced to date some of the districts finest
players. The 2006/07 season saw another success for the club with
great results, having 7 Junior teams in finals with both the 15-1's and
11-1's winning premierships. Senior results were 4 teams competing in finals
and 8th Grade winning the Premiership.
